Thanks for posting Andrew. Here is my study of the large Eroded Face that sits within the cliff (Figure 1). Figure 1 Large Eroded Face I don't believe the face is as eroded as you might think. I'm seeing a bifurcated head with two faces, split right down the middle. Here is a duplicated version of the left side of the Eroded Face (Figure 2). Notice the dark eye sockets, the small nose and mouth with beaded ornamentation. Figure 2 Large Eroded Face - left side duplicated Here is the right side duplicated (Figure 3). Notice the round, highly decorative "star burst" eye with tear band, running down the cheek. It has a small nose and mouth. The head wears a rounded helmet with a pair of horn-like features. Great find Alane! Nice split George. Very reminiscent of Ollantaytambo faces in Peru! Looks like half of bird face to the right. Not sure about this but George likes birds. lol Also an image in the foreground with bracket just above.

The second face is pretty interesting in that it looks like there are arms on either side holding up a large slab. The conical rock now becomes a set of knees coming Out of the ground

This is a split of the large stone set back from the main split face. The split is done by using the pointed rock in the foreground.

Very cool stuff folks. The right side face from George reminds me of an Indian mask/decoration of some sort

Hi Andrew. Yes, the ornamentation seen around the right side of the face looks a lot like the decorative features seen in Peruvian masks. The most prominent ornamentation observed within the right side of the Eroded Head is a tear band running down the cheek. Here is a comparison of the Eroded Head to a gold Peruvian mask with tear bands (Figure 1). Figure 1 Eroded Head compared to a Gold Peruvian Mask Left: Eroded Head on Mars (Right side duplicated) Right: Gold Peruvian Mask (The Sun God Tiwanaku) Mask from the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Texas. Note: the tear bands represent the golden tears of the sun. GJH

The rock being held up looks like the Egyptian glyph for the Vault of the Sky. Similar to the Maya glyph as well. So this would make the scene as the Sun god holding up the vault of the sky!

This mirrored image is from the right side of the image linked above. Alane, I notice that your original photo was color, the source image is grayscale. Do you have a higher resolution original?
Thanks.

My original was taken from the Nev Thompson Gigapan link I originally provided. If I go to the NASA MSL site and type in Sol 3279 the black and white image is all that shows up. I don't know if Nev gets his images from somewhere else (I doubt it). I think its more likely he converts it to color in his process of creating the gigapan. Cheers
