I believe that there was originally life on three planets, Earth, Mars and a third planet located between Mars and Jupiter in the very distant past. Unfortunately the third planet was destroyed either accidentally or by design when a weapon of great destruction was fired at, and destroyed, the planet positioned between Mars and Jupiter (now taken up by the asteroid belt). On it's course towards the destined planet the intense energy beam, either by accident or design, scraped past the side of Mars causing a devastating chain of events that created the massive rift that now dominates one side of Mars and helped to wipe out life. Not only this but the exploding planet peppered the facing side of Mars with countless pieces of shrapnel resulting in the numerous craters which are located on the side of Mars that faced towards that direction and the planet targeted by the weapon. There are stories of ancient battles in the skies and also of a 'gigantic monster' that was a 'threat to the entire universe' which had to be destroyed! I believe that if you read between the lines the 'monster' was, rightly or wrongly, the destroyed planet. Also due to some amount of mis-calculation the result was that the Earth ended up being completely irradiated, forcing any inhabitants to either seek shelter below ground (underground caverns found that may have supported life!) or to abandon Earth completely until a time when the radiation levels return to supporting life without causing it's inhabitants diseases such as cancer caused by the level of the radiation. (what if crop circles are a way for returning refugees to inform each other of the radiation levels from a distance that is not going to cause harm letting them know when it is safe to finally return and claim their rightful place on this planet we call home?!)
