The most exact half-portrait of a human face was discovered in the Galaxias Fossae area of Mars in 2001 by an independent researcher by the name Nathan Schoeller. MOC image M02-03483 Half-face formation can be seen just above the center of image - on the left. The half-face formation observed in MOC image M02-03483 has all the requirements that one would expect to find in an actual human face including the appropriate size, shape, proportion and anatomical orientation. Human Face (Duplicated) MOC M02-03483 Notice the facial features include an almond-shaped eye, a broad nose with distinct nostrils and pursed mouth. There is additional evidence of a cheekbone, a creased forehead, a mustache feature and even wrinkles around the eye. The face has a real familiar look and the portrait is topped off with a triangular hat. Its natural expression evokes a more personalized style of portraiture rather than a generic rendering of a human face. NOTE an extensive analysis of this formation was published in The Martian Codex: More Reflections from Mars (2009), see pages 171-187. GJH

The front brim of the "straw" hat of the Human Face appears to be folded back and tacked up with a decorative ornament, much like the triangular two-cornered hats worn by 18th and 19th century pirates and naval officers. Besides European seafarers, Maya Lords also wore triangular hats. A similar two-cornered hat is seen on a stucco head found within the ruins of Tonina, Mexico that has a similar styling to the Mars image. GJH Attachments:

Here is Nate's original outline of how he saw the face - with hat. Here is a link to Nate's original web page describing the Human Face. natebig.tripod.com/NASA-pictures/human.htmNOTE: It's appears to be only one page. None of the links to the main web site work. GJH

Nate's Human Face is related to the Aztec god of fertility and agricultural produce, Xochipilli. Here is an image of the god Xochipilli found in the Codex Borgia, where he is disguised as a deer. Notice the shield-shaped human face and the two half-faces (with large teeth) that flank the shield. Now take a look at the original MOC image of Nate's Human Face (labeled A) and look at the smaller half-face (Glyph C) next to it (Labeled B). The half-face (Glyph C) that flanks the shield-face has a bulbous nose, round eye, large teeth and puffy cheeks, just like the half-faced formation sitting next to Nate's Human Face..... In reviewing the area around Nate's Human Face in MOC image M02-03483 it becomes clear that it is just a small portion of a much larger composite geoglyph. MOC M02-03483 with demarcation In 2005 a second image of Nate's Human Face was acquired (MOC S04-01401), which include more of the geoglyphic formation. When the same demarcation line is extended down the formation and the left side is duplicated a shaman-like figure riding a jaguar is revealed. Notice that the human face that was originally observed by Nate is actually in-fixed between the eyes of a larger mountainous composite face. This mountainous craggy face not only contains Nathan’s Human Face, but its features are formed by a composite of its surrounding elements. There is the tri-leafed, plumed headdress at the top and a second smaller figure immediately below Nathan’s Human Face riding a jaguar. The rider’s head is formed within the mouth of Nathan’s Human Face and conflates within his chin. His forearm and hands appear to be part of the nose ornament of the craggy face, while the jaguar eyes and muzzle form the mouth and tongue of the craggy face. A pair of extended serpents frames the outer face as well, with their heads ending over its brow. The serpent heads are similar to the flaming dragon motifs often seen etched over the eyebrows of Olmec were-jaguar masks. The mountainous craggy face is also surrounded by a set of enormous pods. Similar chocolate pod motifs are often seen attached to or surrounding deities throughout pre-Columbian American art. When the formation is compared to a Pre-Colombian sculpture - of a famous creation event - depicting a shaman riding a jaguar into the Underworld to retrieve both corn and chocolate, Nate's Human Face begins to reveal more of its secrets.
