Terra Cimmeria region of Mars covers a large section of the southern hemisphere of the planet. It is located in the Eridania quadrangle below Elysium Planitia. Its Coordinates lie between 12° North and 73° South and 179° East to 98° West. The word Terra means land, while the word Cimmerium refers to a seafaring people of Greek Mythology. It is believed they lived within a perpetual mist and darkness near the land of the dead. According to Herodotus, the Cimmerians inhabited the region north of the Caucasus and the Black Sea. In 2000, NASA released MOC image FHA-01046 that framed a very symmetrical formation in its sights that I have called First Temple (Figure 1). Note the image on the left is a formation found in the Terra Cimmeria area of Mars referred to as First Temple, while the image on the right is the ruins of a Sumerian pyramid in Iraq. Notice the symmetry of the structures foundation on Mars and the L-shaped “wall” in the lower right hand side of the strip. Attachments:

This formation is one of the best examples of artificial structures on Mars I have seen.

Well, I was going to disagree, but after thinking about it, I have to agree this is as good an example of artificial structure as any, since there are none at all.

Hello gaden. It was the symmetry of the formation that first caught my attention.

Unfortunately, symmetry denotes nothing except symmetry. In and of itself, it in no way indicates artificiality. I have seen no pictures anywhere that even remotely looks artificial. In fact, most that people point to as suspicious take quite a bit of imagination just to see. Frankly, I think people like you do the public a diservice by spreading these false reports. You are, in my not so humble opinion, taking advantage of some people's gullibilty.

gaden. First of all no imagination need for this formation. Symmetry in geology always gets my attention. And simple geology does not create complex symmetrical formations such as this "First Temple."
It still looks like a ruined foundation to me.

Babylon ancient ruins, are also mounds other than the rebuilt walls.
Could their timing be similar.

Hi login. Yes the similarities between the ancient ruins of Babylon and this Martian formation is remarkable.

Hello convex. Welcome to The Cydonia Institute's discussion board. Sorry for the confusion, but the image number was incorrect. It is SP2-54006. Note: I have adjusted the image and provided a link to the original strip. MOC image SP2-54006: www.msss.com/moc_gallery/ab1_m04/images/SP254006.htmlThere are a lot of "ruins" in this strip. Looking forward to seeing what you find... GJH

Thank you George. Now I see its in Nilosyrtis Mensae. An area that we have not yet examined. I should keep this area in mind. Talking about ruins, I also like this one. It is located in Eastern Arabia. It's not a very large image but it has a quite good resolution. Here are some excerpts of the most interesting features there: Source: ida.wr.usgs.gov/html/m03043/m0304371.htmlThe shown structures give the impression of ruins that are and severely eroded and partially buried under sand. Nevertheless, a nice example, I think. It would be really exciting to work as exo-archaeologist on Mars.

The symmetrical shape of the "First Temple" foundation was confirmed in a MRO CTX image (D04_028598_1426_XI_37S195W) that was taken in 2012. First Temple. Also notice the L-shaped foundation below it. GJH

You also have to take into consideration that it's been over millions of years so there won't be much left to see. But I agree there are plenty of things that make you scratch your head when you look at some of the photos on mars. I am so happy private industry is getting invoked in space so we don't have to rely on NASA dragging their feet getting to mars as Elon will get us there in the next 10 years!!

Is there any estimate of the scale of these formations?
The clearer picture looks almost like a machine part, though it is probably quite large to be photographed from space.
